A new version of Microsoft Edge is in the works, and it’s expected to introduce a new user interface and features to further integrate the browser on Windows 11.
According to a report from Windows Central (via WalkingCat on Twitter), Microsoft is working on a project known as “Phoenix” that aims to redesign the Edge browser with a new interface that aligns with the design language available on Windows 11. In addition, this new version will introduce new productivity features and more integration with the operating system.
The idea of this new version is to make the browser more unique and different from its competitors, even though it’s based on the Chromium web browser developed by Google. Some of these new elements can already be found in preview releases of Microsoft Edge, such as “split screen,” which allows you to work and compare two tabs side-by-side.
Another feature that Microsoft is building is the “Tab Activity Center,” which will offer insights into how you use the browser over time.
Furthermore, the Phoenix project also aims to better integrate the browser into Windows 11. For example, we expect Microsoft Edge to become the password manager of choice for the system and you to be able to set up the browser during the initial setup of Windows 11.
In a concept video Tweeted by WalkingCat (see above link), we can see that one of the most significant improvements will come to the interface, which includes more rounded corners and other elements that makes it more consistent with the Windows 11 design.
It’s unclear when the redesigned version of Microsoft Edge will be available to users. However, it appears that Microsoft will ship the new experience in parts and not through an update that will include everything.
