After many years, Microsoft has finally released a new webcam for the modern workspace. It’s called the “Microsoft Modern Webcam,” and it is a basic camera that offers good video quality at only $69.99.
The webcam offers full-HD (1080p) resolution, support for HDR video quality, and 78 percent field of view optimized for meetings. And it is also certified for Microsoft Teams.
Perhaps one of the design features that stands out is the shutter that you can easily slide open and close over the lens for privacy and a LED that indicates when the camera is active. So, no more putting tape to cover the lens.
Technical details
The camera provides up to 1080p 30fps video output, high dynamic range (HDR) for more vibrant colors, auto exposure, auto white balance, and auto anti-flicker in the technical side of things.
As with most cameras in the market today, the Microsoft Modern Webcam also includes an easy-to-mount system that attaches to your monitor, tripod, laptop, or desk.
Missing features
Since this a budget device, the company also opted for a USB-A instead of a USB-C connection. You won’t find Windows Hello support for easy and secure authentication on Windows 10, and there is no support for 4K video either.
The new webcam is not meant to reinvent cameras. Instead, it is a simple accessory to add video calling capabilities on laptops and desktops that lack such a feature in a world rapidly changing that now makes video communication an essential element.
Pricing and availability
The Microsoft Modern Webcam is compatible with Windows 10, Windows 8.x, and macOS. It is expected to ship in June 2021, and it will cost $69.99. You can find more details at Microsoft.
