How to fix network videos not playing on Xbox One

Are you getting a black screen trying to play videos using the Media Player app on Xbox One? Then it could be an UPnP settings problem, and this guide will help to fix this issue.

On Xbox One, you can use the Media Player app to access and play videos stored on another computer or Network Attached Storage (NAS) using the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) protocol. While this feature should just work with zero effort, sometimes you’ll encounter problems playing videos or using the protocol for multiplayer gaming and chat.

If you recently added a NAS device to your network, or you upgraded your network storage connected to your router, and you can no longer play videos on Xbox one, you can fix this problem in at least two different ways.

In this guide, you’ll learn the steps to fix the UPnP settings to play videos over the network on your Xbox One console.

How to fix UPnP settings on Xbox One

To fix UPnP protocol not working on your Xbox One to get videos playing again, you can do two things. You can make sure that you’re setting up the feature correctly, and you can use the network settings troubleshooter.

Using network troubleshooter

To use the network troubleshooter to fix video playback on Xbox One, use these steps:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Click on Network.

  3. Click on Network settings.

  4. Under the “Troubleshooting” section, click the Test NAT Type option.

Once you’ve completed the steps, the troubleshooter will run some fixes, and then you should be able to play videos store in the network again using the Media Player app.

Using setup method

If you’re still unable to access your network storage using Media Player app, and you’re seeing UPnP not successful in the network settings, it’s likely the device isn’t configured correctly.

Important: The steps below will guide you through the process to fix the UPnP problem, but you’ll also need to consult your manufacturer support website to see the specific steps to manage your router.
  1. Open your router settings using a web browser.

  2. Disable the UPnP feature.

  3. Save the router settings.

  4. Restart your router (or modem) and Xbox One.

  5. Enable the UPnP feature on your router.

  6. Save the router changes. (If there’s a Zero Config setting, make sure to turn it on, too.)

  7. Restart the router and Xbox One again.

After completing the steps, you should be able to use the UPnP settings again, which should allow you to play videos again using the Media Player app.
