UPDATED 1/12/2024: On Windows 11, you can show the weather information on the Lock screen, and in this guide, you will learn how. The Lock screen is the first experience you see before accessing the Sign-in screen and then the desktop. By default, the experience shows a background (which you can always change or rotate using the Spotlight feature) and the date and time information. However, you can also see the weather by configuring the “Lock screen status” through the Settings app, so you don’t have to reach your phone or look at this information on the web as often.
This guide will teach you the steps to display the weather information on the Lock screen on Windows 11.
Show weather on Windows 11 Lock screen
To show your local weather information on the Lock Screen, use these steps:
-
Open Settings on Windows 11.
-
Click on Personalization.
-
Click the Lock screen tab.
-
Select the Weather option in the “Lock screen status” setting.
Quick note: You can also choose to show your mail or calendar information on the Lock screen.
Once you complete the steps, the next time you lock, sign out, or restart the computer, the weather details will be available at the bottom of the Lock screen.
You probably don’t have the app if the “Weather” option isn’t available. You can download the Windows 11 Weather app from the Microsoft Store.
Enable new weather on Windows 11 Lock screen
Microsoft is testing a new widget-like interface to show rich weather information, and you can enable it now in the latest preview of Windows 11 through the Dev and Beta Channels. The company is even working on bringing the feature to Windows 10.
To enable the new weather widget in the Lock Screen, use these steps:
-
Download the ViveTool-vx.x.x.zip file to enable the new Lock Screen weather.
-
Double-click the zip folder to open it with File Explorer.
-
Click the Extract all button.
-
Click the Extract button.
-
Copy the path to the folder.
-
Open Start.
-
Search for Command Prompt, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.
-
Type the following command to navigate to the ViveTool folder and press Enter:
cd c:\folderpath\ViveTool-v0.x.x
In the command, remember to change the path to the folder with your path.
-
Type the following command to enable the Lock Screen weather page for Settings and press Enter:
vivetool /enable /id:47526873 /variant:1 /variantpayloadkind:1 /variantpayload:1
-
Restart the computer.
-
Open Settings.
-
Click on Personalization.
-
Click the Lock Screen page.
-
Choose the Weather (or None) option in the “Lock screen status” setting.
Once you complete the steps, the next time you are on the Lock Screen, you should be able to see the weather information.
This information is tied to the Weather feature on Windows 11. If the system doesn’t display the correct information, you can set your current location from the Weather app or from the Weather widget in the Widgets dashboard.
If you change your mind, you can revert the changes with the same instructions, but on step 10, make sure to use the vivetool /enable /id:47526873 /variant:1 /variantpayloadkind:1 /variantpayload:1
command and then restart the computer.
Update January 12, 2024: This guide has been updated to ensure accuracy and to include the steps to try out the new weather feature in the latest preview of Windows.
