  • Bing chatbot now allows you to change the response style.
  • You can choose from three options, including “Creative,” “Balanced,” or “Precise.”
  • However, depending on the tone, the chatbot may produce less accurate responses.

Microsoft is proactively updating its Bing Chat before it becomes available to everyone, and now, the company is testing an option to change the tone of the responses. If you have already signed up to access the new Bing, the next time you are on the Chat page, you will find a new “Choose a conversation style” setting to change the tone to “Creative,” “Balanced,” or “Precise.”

The new options became available shortly after testers started reporting odd and incorrect answers with argumentative tones and other strange behaviors. The company quickly answered the feedback saying that after a long session, the AI model can generate unwanted behaviors and then limited the chat turns per session to 5 and expanded to 50 total chats daily. Shortly after, it increased turns to 6 and 60 chats per day.

Following those restrictions changes, the company is now experimenting with options to change the response tone. The reason for these new options is to try to balance the experience, depending on the context of the situation. For example, the “Creative” tone will generate more playful and original responses. However, changing the tone (style) to “creative” may cause the chatbot to produce less accurate answers.

The “Balanced” tone will allow the Bing AI chatbot to respond more neutrally, meaning it will try not to take sides on a specific topic.

Finally, the “Precise” tone will be the option that generates the most accurate response with more facts.

You can switch between the tones at any time with options at the top of the Chat page. Or you can always use the chatbot to change the tone using the “Change mode to” Creative, Balanced, or Precise, depending on your preferences and the type of answer you want. If you change the tone, it’s also a good idea to click the broom icon to start fresh with a new conversation since you are currently limited to six queries per session.

In addition to these changes, Microsoft is also working on an update to improve the response quality by reducing clutter summarizations and producing fewer text analysis errors. The update will also include a new tagging system to help reduce confusion in longer conversations with the Bing AI.

The response tones are available now as a preview, and the quality update is expected to roll out soon.
