Microsoft officially introduces a new version of Bing that integrates the latest version of ChatGPT from OpenAI. The new experience is available immediately on the desktop as a closed preview with limited queries.

In the official announcement, Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, said, “AI will fundamentally change every software category, starting with the largest category of all – search.”

As part of the new Bing, the company is describing five pilers, including “better search” with a familiar search result page, but now with a new sidebar that shows comprehensive answers to your query. “Complete answers” means that the search engine can now summarize the answer without jumping from website to website.

If you want to perform a more complex search, you can use the new “Chat” experience to have a more human conversation with the AI chatbot to obtain a complete answer.

According to the company, the new Chat experience can also be used to “spark creativity” since Bing can now generate content to help you in school and work.

Finally, Microsoft is unveiling an updated version of the Edge browser that integrates with the new AI capabilities and updated visuals with a new header interface with rounded corners and mica material. In addition, you will find two more features, including “Chat” and “compose.” Using the sidebar, you can ask for a summary “of a lengthy financial report to get the key takeaways, and then use the chat function to ask for a comparison to a competing company’s financials and automatically put it in a table.”

The announcement also explains how the company is building the next version of Bing with AI capabilities. It all starts with the latest version of the language model from OpenAI, which is more powerful than ChatGPT and has been optimized for search. The technology is based on ChatGPT 3.5, but the version for Bing is “faster, more accurate, and more capable.”

Then the company developed a proprietary way known as the “Prometheus model” to integrate Bing with the OpenAI model. “This combination gives you more relevant, timely, and targeted results, with improved safety.” In addition, Microsoft has also worked on a system to integrate the AI into the search algorithm of Bing, which leads to “the largest jump in relevance in two decades.”

Finally, to complete the experience, the company updated the search page to improve the interaction with the search box, browser, and chat.

Since this new technology can also be misused, Microsoft and OpenAI are implementing safeguards to defend against harmful content. And the company is also working to improve problems, such as “misinformation and disinformation, content blocking, data safety and preventing the promotion of harmful or discriminatory content.” However, this will be an ongoing effort rather than a one-time fix.

If you open the Bing page today, you may find a slightly different interface that lets you type queries of up to one thousand characters. You will find your typical list of links on the results page, but on the right, Microsoft is placing the “Chat” interface with AI-generated answers to complement the search.

You can continue asking questions through the Chat interface, but you will only have access to the chatbot once to receive the invitation for the limited preview, which you can sign up for with these instructions. However, the company is expected to scale the preview to millions of people “in the coming weeks,” and a mobile experience is also in development.
