Google recently introduced dark mode for Chrome, and starting with version 78, the browser goes one step further by adding a new option that allows you to force web contents to switch to a dark color scheme.
The feature is still in the experimental stages, and it doesn’t work perfectly, as you’ll notice that some elements on the page won’t look as expected. However, if you like to read content with a dark background, the “force dark mode” is usable in its current state, but you must enable the feature manually.
In this guide, you’ll learn the steps to enable dark mode for web content in the Chrome web browser on Windows 10, macOS, or Linux.
How to force dark mode for web contents in Chrome
To force dark mode for web contents in Chrome, use these steps:
-
Open Chrome.
-
Type the following path in the address bar and press Enter:
chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark
-
Use the drop-down menu on the right and select the Enabled option.
Quick tip: The feature includes different option for invert colors. If the sites you frequently use don’t look the best with the default “Enabled” option, then you should try the different options, including “Enabled with simple HSL-based inversion,” “Enabled with simple CIELAB-based inversion,” “Enabled with simple RGB-based inversion,” “Enabled with selective image inversion,” “Enabled with selective inversion of non-image elements,” or “Enabled with selective inversion of everything.” -
Click the Relaunch now button.
Once you complete the steps, when you switch to the dark mode on Windows 10 or macOS, not only elements of the Chrome browser will switch to dark mode, but the option will now force the web contents you’re viewing to use dark color scheme.
