How to disable out of support full-screen notification on Windows 7

Windows 7 has reached the end of its life cycle on January 14, 2020, and to make sure that users are aware of the risks of running an unsupported operating system, since January 15, Microsoft enabled a new full screen popup on devices running Windows 7 recommending to switch to Windows 10.

The new full screen popup is part of the new “EOSNotify” program that installs automatically with update KB4530734.

Once the update is installed, using the Task Scheduler, Windows 7 will trigger the “Your Windows 7 PC is out of support” notification with the following message: “As of January 14, 2020, support for Windows 7 has come to an end. Your PC is more vulnerable to viruses and malware due to: no security updates, no software updates, and no tech support. Microsoft strongly recommends using Windows 10 on a new PC for latest security features and protection against malicious software.”

How to disable Windows 7 out of support full screen message

To disable the “Your Windows 7 PC is out of support” message, click the “Don’t remind me again” option, or use these steps:

Warning: It’s very important to note that modifying the Windows Registry can cause serious problems if not used properly. It’s assumed you know what you’re doing and that you have created a full backup of your system before proceeding.

  1. Open Start.

  2. Search for regedit and click the top result to open the app.

  3. Browse the following path:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\EOSNotify

  4. Right-click the EOSNotify key, select New, and click on Key.

    Quick tip: If the “EOSNotify” key is not available, right-click the CurrentVersion key, select New, click on Key, and name it EOSNotify.

  5. Name the key DiscontinueEOS and press Enter. (If the “DiscontinueEOS” already exists skip step No. 5 and continue with step No. 6.)

  6. Double-click the newly created key.

  7. Set the key value from 0 to 1.

  8. Click the OK button.

  9. Restart your computer.

Once you complete the steps, the Windows 7 out of support message will no longer nag you about upgrading to Windows 10, but you should strongly consider switching to a supported version of the operating system.

Although you can always use the “Don’t remind me again” option, following the steps now will prevent you from ever seeing the message on your device.
