  • Copilot is still limited to some regions in North America and parts of Asia and South America, but it will expand to other regions over time.

UPDATED 12/1/2023: On Windows 10, you can enable an early preview of Copilot, and in this guide, I’ll outline the steps to complete this configuration. Microsoft has announced that Copilot will soon come to Windows 10, but you get early installing the update KB5032278 available in the Stable Channel as an optional download. The features should appear automatically after installing the update, but if it’s not, you may have to enable the feature manually (via Albacore on X) using the ViveTool to turn on Copilot and then tweak the Registry to make the feature available in the Taskbar. (You must also use a Microsoft account to use the feature.)

Copilot on Windows 10 is identical to the experience on Windows 11, with a flyout interface that slights in from the right side when clicking the “Copilot” button in the Taskbar. In the app, you can ask for rewrites and summarizations and explain content without opening the browser. Furthermore, the AI can assist you in taking actions, customizing settings, and seamlessly connecting across your favorite apps.

In this guide, I’ll outline the steps to enable an early preview of Copilot on Windows 10.

Important: Modifying the Registry can cause severe problems if improperly used. It is assumed you know what you are doing and have created a system backup before proceeding.

  2. Click on Update & Security.

  3. Click on Windows Update.

Once you complete the steps, the system will check if your device is eligible to turn on Copilot.

If the chatbot doesn’t appear in the Taskbar’s System Tray, you can use step 14 to add the button. If the feature is still unavailable, you can try the instructions below. Alternatively, you can wait until the feature automatically becomes available for your setup.

On November 30, 2023, Microsoft confirmed a bug with the update KB5032278 that moves desktop icons unexpectedly between monitors or other icon alignment issues when attempting to use Copilot. As a result of this problem, devices with a multi-monitor setup do not get Copilot until the bug is fixed. Even further, this issue will also prevent devices from upgrading to Windows 11 23H2.

Enable Copilot on Windows 10 (manually)

To enable Windows 10 Copilot, use these steps:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Click on Update & Security.

  3. Click on Windows Update.

  4. Click the “Check for updates” button to download the KB5032278 (build 19045.3754) update.

  5. Restart the computer.

  6. Open Microsoft Edge.

Quick note: You’re only required to have the latest update of the stable version, but you may also want to install the version available in the Canary Channel to ensure the chatbot installs on your computer.
  7. Open the “Settings and more” (three dots) menu, select the “Help and feedback” submenu, and choose the “About Microsoft Edge” option to check for updates.

  8. Click the Restart button to apply the latest update.

  13. Click the Extract button.

  14. Copy the path to the folder.

  15. Open Start.

  16. Search for Command Prompt, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.

  17. Type the following command to navigate the ViveTool folder and press Enter:

    cd c:\folder\path\ViveTool-v0.x.x

In the command, remember to change the path to the folder with your path.

  18. Type the following command to enable Copilot on Windows 10 and press Enter:

    vivetool /enable /id:46686174,47530616,44755019

    Windows 10 enable Copilot

  19. Restart the computer.

  20. Open Start.

  21. Search for regedit and click the top result to open the Registry (if applicable).

Quick note: When I was enabling the feature on my device, I noticed Copilot in the Taskbar immediately after turning on the IDs with ViveTool. At this point, if you don’t see the feature, you may have to modify the Registry. Also, remember that you must be signed with a Microsoft account.
  22. Browse the following path:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Copilot\BingChat
  23. Right-click the IsUserEligible DWORD and choose the Edit option.

  24. Change the DWORD value from 0 to 1.

    Registry Copilot Taskbar setting

  25. Click the OK button.

  26. Restart the computer.

  27. Right-click the Taskbar and select the “Show Copilot (preview)” button.

Once you complete the steps, Copilot should appear in the Taskbar next to the notifications icon. You can click the button or use the “Windows key + C” keyboard shortcut to launch the experience.

If you change your mind, you can revert the changes with the same instructions, but in step 15, make sure to use the vivetool /enable /id:46686174,47530616,44755019 command and then restart the computer.

On Windows 11, Copilot is currently only available in North America and parts of Asia and South America, so I assume this will also be the case on Windows 10. As a result, you can try these instructions, but the feature may not be enabled for everyone.

Update November 22, 2023: This guide has been updated to reflect that Microsoft is now rolling out the feature on eligible devices with the latest system update.

Update December 1, 2023: This guide has been updated to reflect that the update is now available in the Stable Channel, and it should install the chatbot automatically after turning out the new option in the “Windows Update” settings page. Also, this guide points out the bug with Copilot on multi-monitor setups.
