Microsoft stops making games for Xbox One

Microsoft moves on to produce games only for Xbox Series X and S.

  • Microsoft no longer makes games for Xbox One.
  • Current games will continue to be supported on the console.
  • You’ll have to get an Xbox Series X or S or use Xbox Cloud Gaming to access new first-party games.

Microsoft has confirmed that it will no longer produce first-party games for Xbox One consoles. According to an interview, Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, has said that the company is now focused on creating games for the Xbox Series X and S (Generation 9).

The news doesn’t mean current games will no longer work on Xbox One console. It only means that studios won’t be creating new games from the previous console generation. Also, the company will continue to support current games and Xbox One hardware for the foreseeable future.

If you’re still on the previous version of the console, you will have to upgrade to a Series X or S, or alternatively, you can use the Xbox Cloud Gaming app to play new games not designed for Xbox One on the previous version of the console.

The Xbox Series S starts at $299.99, giving you access to the new generation of games up to 1440p and 120fps (and 512GB of storage), but some games will still play at 1080p at lower frame rates. Also, the company recently announced a newer version of the Series S that features 1TB of storage and a new carbon black color for $349.99.

If you want the best Xbox experience possible, you will have to drop $499.99 to get the Xbox Series X since it packs more graphical power, 16GB of RAM, and up to 4K resolution and 120fps.

Whatever console you choose, it’ll allow you to play the newest generation of games as well as those games designed for Xbox One, including many games from the Xbox 360 generation and various titles from the original Xbox. The only games you won’t be able to play on Series X or S are those games that require the Kinect accessory.
