Windows 11 build 23424 rolls out in Dev Channel

A new preview of Windows 11 is rolling out in the Dev Channel with changes for Widgets and Settings app and the usual fixes and improvements.

Microsoft is now rolling out Windows 11 build 23424 for devices enrolled in the Dev Channel of the Windows Insider Program. This is a minor update, but it packs some interesting new features, improvements, and fixes.

Build 23424 for Windows 11, according to the official changes, introduces a redesigned Widgets board with three columns that focus on separating the widgets from the news feed. The Content Adaptive Brightness Control feature now runs on laptops, convertibles, and desktops. The Settings app introduces a new update option for testers and updates the “Wheel” page to match the design language of the operating system.

New Widgets board design

Starting with build 23424, Windows 11 introduces a redesigned Widgets board with three columns that will make it easier for users to differentiate between the widgets and news feed.

Content Adaptive Brightness Control (CABC)

Starting with this flight, Windows 11 will allow the Content Adaptive Brightness Control feature to run on devices such as laptops and convertibles that are plugged into a charger, as well as on desktops.

You can update the feature from the “Display” settings page (under the “Brightness & color” section), and choose one of the available options, including “Off,” “Always,” or “On Battery Only.”

Windows Update settings

On Windows 11 build 23424, the “Windows Update” page now includes a new “getting the latest updates as soon as they are available” setting that is meant for the Beta Channel users to switch more seamlessly to the enablement package.

Wheel settings 

Also, the “Wheel” page that houses the settings for devices like the Surface Dial in the “Bluetooth & devices” section matches the Windows 11 new design language.

Fixes and improvements

This flight also ships with a bunch of fixes and improvements for Taskbar, Input, Settings, File Explorer, and more.

File Explorer

  • Fixed the following issues for Insiders with recommended files in File Explorer.
  • Fixed the issue causing an error dialog to pop up when clicking on the “Open File Location” command.
  • Fixed the issue causing no action to occur when clicking on the ‘Remove from list’ command.

Settings

  • Improved the performance of search within Settings.

Windowing

  • Fixed an issue from the last flight where Microsoft Edge tabs would show when doing ALT + Tab even if Settings > System > Multitasking was set to “Don’t show tabs”.

Input

  • Improved performance when using a high report rate mouse while gaming.

Task Manager

  • Fixed an issue where the search icon could end up overlapping the Task Manager icon in the title bar.

Other changes

  • Fixed an issue that was causing voice access to take some time to turn on after using the wake-up command.

This release also has known issues with the File Explorer, Live Captions, and Taskbar.

In addition, Windows 11 build 23424 rolls out a new version of the Microsoft Store app with various improvements, including the ability to install free apps and games from search results, a new design when purchasing apps and games, and a new interface for in-app rating dialog.

Install build 23424

If you want to download and install the Windows 11 build 23424, enroll your device in the Dev Channel using the “Windows Insider Program” settings from the “Windows Update” section.

Once you enroll the computer in the program, you can download build 23424 from the “Windows Update” settings by clicking the Check for Updates button. However, you will need a device that meets the minimum system requirements to receive the update if you are new to the Windows Insider Program.
