  • Microsoft announces Windows Copilot for Windows 11 devices.
  • The Copilot brings a new personal chatbot assistant to the operating system.
  • The AI can do everything that Bing Chat can do, plus other actions like changing system settings.
  • Windows Copilot will roll out as a preview in June 2023.

Microsoft introduces “Windows Copilot,” the new chatbot AI integration for Windows 11 devices. According to the announcement, the “Windows Copilot” defines the integration of the Bing Chat AI and first and third-party plugins into Windows 11 (and for higher releases) that allows users to interact with the chatbot.

The Copilot appears as a flyout interface that slights in from the right side (similar to the Microsoft Edge Copilot) when clicking the “Copilot” button in the Taskbar.

Once in the interface, the experience is consistent across applications. Similar to the Bing Chat AI on the web and mobile and the AI experience on Microsoft Edge, the Copilot for Windows 11 can help users with complex questions, and users can ask for rewrites, summarizations, and explain content without opening the browser.

Furthermore, the AI can assist users in taking actions, customizing settings, and seamlessly connecting across their favorite apps. The company explains that by using “Bing and ChatGPT plugins in Windows Copilot, people will not only have access to augmented AI capabilities and experiences, but you as developers will also have new ways to reach and innovate for our shared customers.”

Also, through the Bing Chat plugins, developers will be able to integrate their apps into the Windows Copilot to build new interactions.

According to the company, Windows Copilot will become available as a preview for Windows 11 customers sometime in June 2023.

Alongside the introductions of AI on Windows 11, Microsoft is also announcing that it’s bringing AI to the Microsoft Store app, among other features. In the announcement, the company says that the Microsoft Store will soon include a new “AI Hub” with apps that will “curate the best AI experiences built by the developer community and Microsoft.”

Additionally, the store will feature a new tool in the “Partner Center” that will use AI to generate and suggest search tags for apps to improve discoverability. Also, as part of the AI improvements, the store will “improve” the ability for customers to scan reviews by using AI to compile thousands of reviews into a simple summary.

Other non-AI changes include changes to improve the ability to back up and restore apps when switching Windows 11 devices. This experience will be available starting today as a preview.

Finally, the company plans to expand its ads experience to 150 regions in addition to the United States.
