Bing AI is slowly expanding to more users. Although Microsoft recently launched an early preview of its new search engine with AI capabilities through ChatGPT integration, it was limited to a select number of users, even after requesting access to the new experience.
However, many more users who previously signed up for Bing AI are now receiving access to the experience. If you’re still on the waiting list (I’m one of them), the company plans to make the experience more broadly available to millions of users in the coming weeks.
If you have already joined the list, it may help to make Microsoft Edge the default browser on Windows 11 and Bing the default search engine. Also, the Bing mobile app is another element considering installing jump to the front of the queue.
The new Bing conserves the same search experience that shows results based on link ranking, but it now also combines the search technology with ChatGPT, an AI chatbot from OpenAI that is capable of giving you answers in a more natural language conversational format. Currently, the experience is not only limited to some users but also to the desktop. However, the company is working on a mobile version for phones and tablets.
ChatGPT has been around for some time, but the version available on Bing is more advanced and has been tweaked by Microsoft to work best on search. For example, ChatGPT only works with already known datasets, while Bing can use the information available on the web to present answers for current events.
AI has been a popular topic across the internet for a few months, and the buzz keeps growing quickly, and Microsoft sees this as an opportunity to disrupt the search market mainly dominated by Google for the past two decades. However, Google is also ready to answer the new Bing AI with Bard, a new chatbot from the company that aims to offer a similar experience. Google’s chatbot is currently in limited preview, but unlike the new Bing, the search giant is only allowing certain users to access it. Though, the company says that it’ll open the preview to the public in the coming weeks.
Update February 15, 2023: Microsoft sends a public update noting that it’s currently testing the new Bing “in 169 countries and seeing a lot of engagement with new features like Chat.” The company also says that millions of people have already joined the waitlist, and it’s slowly expanding access to the AI features to more users. In addition, Microsoft says that is “prioritizing those with Bing and Edge as their default search engine & browser as well as the Bing Mobile app installed to optimize the initial experience.”
